Dare to Sing w/ Deric James
Singer songwriter Deric James talks to us about his music, his audience and who he dreams of performing with.
SB (StarBeat): Starting Line: Where do you get your inspiration for writing songs?
DJ (Deric James): As a lyricist I write songs inspired by the journey of personal relationships and by stories from others about their lives. I love to listen to the stories that people tell and often their trials become my muse.
SB: Goals: What do you hope to accomplish with your music?
DJ: To me the greatest gift that music can bring is comfort. My hope has always been to write songs that help people work through their personal struggles. In some ways I look to say the things that they might not be able to say themselves. To give them the words and spirit to lift themselves up and move forward past tough times.
SB: Options: If you could choose between winning a Grammy Award or playing a sold out tour, which would you choose?
DJ: I would choose the tour. A Grammy would be a thrilling achievement, but I would rather build a direct connection through my music and move an audience than win an award any day. Honestly, whether the tour was sold out or not…I would still choose the tour. There’s nothing more powerful than having someone approach you after a show to tell you that your music helped them, healed them, or changed their life in some way.
SB: Secrets: Tell us something that your listeners don’t know about you.
DJ: Even though I’ve been writing songs my whole life, I didn’t really start focus on singing and songwriting until 2 years ago.
Most of my musical background has been as a bass guitarist (which is still a great passion of mine), but life changed for me and I decided it was finally time to start telling these stories that have been in my head for years.
SB: Vision Board: If you could choose one person to collaborate with musically, who would it be?
DJ: John Mayer. I think he’s the the most incredible singer/songwriter of our generation and possibly the most important of the 21st century. He has always been a great inspiration to me and I hope to have that type of impact on someone someday.
