Getting to the Root of a Song w/ Serena Rutledge
Let’s get to know this young singer-songwriter from Canada working the cover game on YouTube at the same time as creating and developing her own sound.
SB (StarBeat): The Intro: When did you get your start performing?
SR (Serena Rutledge): I was 4 years old when I sang in front of an audience for the first time. After that I fell in love with performing and I started playing piano and writing my own songs!
SB: Cover Time: What do you enjoy about posting covers online?
SR: I really love taking a song that I didn’t write and making it my own. Uploading covers on YouTube has allowed me to express my creativity and connect with so many people from so many different parts of the world!
Using YouTube as a platform for my music has been such an amazing experience.
SB: Pick and Choose: Do you prefer performing or writing music?
SR: I love both performing and writing for super different reasons, I don’t think I could choose between the two!
Performing is so much fun because you can interact with an audience and see their reaction, but writing is such an incredible way to tell and share stories with people in your own words.
SB: Getting Social: How have social media platforms driven your career?
SR: Posting pictures and videos online has really helped me connect with awesome people that support me and my music. I receive comments and messages everyday from people I’ve never met that support my career.
Those people really give me the encouragement to keep making music and doing what I love.
SB: Day to Day: How has music influenced your everyday life?
SR: I can’t go a day without playing or listening to music. It gives me strength through tough times and brings me so much happiness,
I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my life!
SB: Vision Board: Anything in the works for the near future?
SR: I’m always writing new songs and recording new covers so stay tuned for lots of new music!
