Musical Musings w/ Moa

Moa has made the move from Sweden to the United States to express and explain herself through her music.  Let’s find out more, and see what she will be up to next!

SB (StarBeat): Intro: Your debut EP [Pronounced; Moe-ah] came out last week. What does the name mean to you?

M (Moa): I’m originally from Sweden where Moa is a common name. Since moving to the US I’ve always had issues when introducing myself; Mora? Mola? Mona? Noa? Lola? So this is pretty much me explaining once and for all who the hell I am 🙂

SB: Subject Matter: What are the songs on the EP about?

M: So the topics of these songs are all over the place, which is a pretty accurate description of me in general, lol. I’m such a scatterbrain. For example, there’s 2 songs about my ride or die, Better With You and Headlights. One of them talks about how I can’t possibly imagine life without him, and in the other one we’re about to break up haha!

I also talk a lot about my self-doubt and breaking the barriers of my own mind. I’ve been in bands my whole life, but I feel these are some of the most honest songs I’ve ever written, because it’s just me this time. I feel very exposed, which is a conscious decision cause I know I’m not the only one struggling with these feelings and I want those who can relate to feel that they are not alone. And that it’s possible to work through it, but it’s a constant work in progress.

SB: Signatory: You signed a publishing deal with BMG for this EP. How did that happen?

M: So I was actually supposed to be on tour playing guitar for another artist when I met Dean from BMG Production Music. I had just gotten fired, a few days before the tour was about to start, so I was pretty bitter. I got a really good vibe from Dean, who said he wanted to work with me, but I was kinda like “yeah I believe it when I see it”. I mean come on, I had just gotten fired! But yeah, long story short it worked out! So moral of the story is, the universe will do whatever it takes to make sure you are where you are supposed to be, it will even get you fired if it needs to, haha!

SB: Showtime: You had your release party at the world famous Gibson Showroom in Beverly Hills. How did you get that?

M: So I contacted Gibson about a year ago cause I needed a semi hollow for a video I was doing. I didn’t expect them to get back to me but within the hour I had an appointment. I came in and picked up the guitar and I almost peed my pants cause I was so nervous haha! Gibson has always been my favorite guitar brand so it felt so surreal to walk in there and pick whatever I wanted. Then it turned out my artist rep go to the same gym as me so we became gym buddies. So when the time came for my release there was no question where I wanted to spend the big night and I was so f***ing happy that we got to open up the doors to all my friends for one night.

It was better than my birthday and Christmas at once!

SB: On the Horizon: What can we expect from MOA next?

M: I’m currently busy planning my world domination, and if you want to follow me on my journey I’m a hardcore instagrammer (@pronouncedmoeah). Right now we’re in the process of cutting a mini documentary from my release party at Gibson, so that will come out in a few weeks. I’ve also started writing for my next EP with my partner in crime/producer, Yianni Anastos-Prastacos and I’m digging even deeper into my brain this time so you can expect some real personal stuff that I hope you can relate to/help you getting through sh*t. I will also announce new tour dates soon, so lot’s of fun stuff coming up!! Hope you want to be part of it 🙂
