Road to Music w/ Mikayla Lane

Teen singer songwriter Mikayla Lane is taking us down her road to the music and she shares her inspirations, her music and band, and where she hopes the route will take her in the future.

SB (StarBeat): Introductions Please: Can you introduce yourself and let us know about your music style?

ML (Mikayla Lane): Yes! My name is Mikayla Lane, I’m 14 years old and I’m from Mannford, OK outside of Tulsa.  I’m a country vocalist with little rasp and soulful inflections.

SB: Inspirations: Any artists that influenced you?

ML: I would have to say Carrie Underwood. I like her controlled voice, range, power and confidence.  I also look up to her high moral standards and humbleness, she’s a great role model. She’s determined – she had a record deal fall through before Idol but worked hard and stayed on the path and even graduated college after winning Idol.  She’s an Okie too!

SB: Performing: Do you play with a band?

ML: I have my own band of very talented players.  I’m thankful and blessed to have their support.  They’re all incredible, professional life-long musicians.  We play regularly in the Tulsa area so come check us out.

SB: Songbook: Do you have personal connections to your songs?

ML: Very much so.  “Emma’s Song” was my first original song that I wrote when I was 11.  Emma was my best childhood friend and the song is about having to move away from her and soon after that she told me her Mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  The song is a message of lasting friendship and encouragement that we are never alone, no matter how far apart or what we may be facing.  

It was a surprise for Emma & Christina (Emma’s Mom); they didn’t know anything about the song until the night before the video was released.  We face timed to tell them about the song and share the video, it was very emotional.  The debut public performance was to be the Saturday after we talked, they drove all night from KY to surprise me to be at my performance.  Bonus: Happy Ending – Christina is cancer free! (The song leaves you wondering).

“Emma’s Song” (You Don’t Have to be Lonely) was selected as a finalist in the 2018 International Songwriter’s Competition.

SB: Playbook: What are your other interests and hobbies?

ML: I was a competitive volleyball player but gave that up to focus on my music.  I love the outdoors, boating, tubing, knee boarding, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkelling, fishing and hunting.  I enjoy my horses and my dog, and I love hanging out with my friends.

SB: Future Plans: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

ML: I see myself still working hard to make my dream of becoming a nationally renowned recording artist/entertainer my reality.
